bon voyage dinner
Marvin left this morning for New York for a few days, so last night we had dinner at Ronin, a fairly new sushi bar/lounge in Royal Oak. (The photos in this link are Marvin’s…) It will be interesting to see how long this restaurant sticks around, since the space it occupies on the corner of Washington and Fourth in Royal Oak is notorious for its high turnover rate! (Incidentally, anyone remember the Metropolitan Music Café? I went there in high school once because we heard a rumor that Morrissey was going to be there… but I digress.)

We were looking for food fairly late for a Tuesday (9pm), so most everything in Ferndale was out of the question. We were surprised by the number of people still eating when we got there, and one of the busboys even commented that it was a “slow night”, so I imagine they’re doing pretty well so far. We ordered an assortment of sushi and appetizers, along with miniature bottles of Geikkekan sake. I observed that Geikkekan is like the “Budweiser of sakes” and Marvin was quick to agree. We switched to a really nice white wine afterwards, of which I cannot recall the name, but it was a blend of nine grapes and came from Oregon.
Highlights and lowlights: The best thing we ordered, hands down, was the Monster Roll. It had salmon, avocado and some other stuff, but the best part was the seaweed it was topped with- it had the most amazing texture and looked like green Medusa hair. I was wondering where they source it from and wish I had asked… Next time! The pork gyozas were on the top of my list as well. Not so great was the tempura. We ordered shrimp and sweet potato, and the dipping sauces were really bland and uninspired. But I would definitely come back… the atmosphere is cooler than any of the other sushi restaurants in RO or Ferndale.
